‘Race to Nowhere: the Darkside of America’s Achievement Culture’ is a movie that every parent MUST SEE. I have had no less then 25 gurumommy readers contact me about seeing this movie, I finally HAD to see it. I haven’t been able to think of anything else since I saw it, it is a disturbing demonstration of the intense pressures we are putting on our children in and out of school and how this pressure is manifesting itself in our kids, who are showing signs of sleep deprivation, anorexia, depression, anxiety, self-mutilation, suicide in kids that are pushed and pushed too hard since Kindergarten!
Filmmaker Vicki Abeles (who directs with Jessica Congdon) explores the culture of high achievement within her own family, her Bay Area community and around the country. Raised to believe in the necessity and value of hard work, she watched her children implode under the weight of extracurricular demands and as many as six hours of nightly homework.
PLEASE, PLEASE see this movie, playing on September 30th at 7pm at the AT&T Center Theatre 1150 South Olive Street Los Angeles. Or check the website for other screenings near you, OR to schedule your own screening at your school or neighborhood theater.
