This fascinating article in Atlantic Magazine written by David Dobbs, describes children as either ‘dandelions’ or ‘orchids’. The dandelions being the more ‘normal’ kids, they do well no matter what type of environment they grow up in. The ‘orchid’ children, meanwhile, may develop behavioral problems if they grow up in neglectful or abusive homes. The interesting turn is new studies that Orchid children may actually thrive more then dandelions in loving homes and that the differences between these 2 types of children is actually genetic and certain children have gene variants that make them more sensitive.
